Research has found that Herpes Simplex infections have lower reactivation rates and Herpes type 2 have lower incidence in Japan than in the west.  A study looked at the effects of ingesting Undaria, the most commonly eaten seaweed in Japan, on patients with shingles.  It found that it increased the rate of healing and reduced incidence of recurrence.

A capsaicin 8% cutaneous patch has been used in Germany since October 2010 for analgesic treatment of neuropathic pain.  A recent study monitored its usage and confirmed it reduced pain and improved the quality of sleep in patients.
