Massage dates back thousands of years, with records of the Chinese using it as far back as 2700BC. It is the manipulation of the soft body tissues to treat physical, functional and sometimes emotional conditions.
The general consensus is that massage can be effective in relieving pain, anxiety and stress as well as helping reduce heart rate and blood pressure.
During a massage the tissues which are being targeted by the practitioner may include ligaments, skin, joints, muscles, connecting tissues, lymphatic system or even the gastro- intestinal system. A variety of oils are used in massage, with olive or almond oil being used as a base.
There are a number of massage therapies available, and it may be useful to try a few to help you decide which one is best for you.
Patient QI View
Massage is a good addition to any healthy lifestyle as well as a good treatment for many health problems. Massage therapists could make good coordinators of a treatment strategy, if they are well trained in other disciplines and have deep enough medical knowledge.
