Gout affects non primates too
If a real Jurassic World existed, the vets would have had their hands full. Anyone who has suffered from gout knows just how bad the pain is, and how bad tempered it can make you. Imagine that pain and bad temper in a T Rex! Until recently, it was thought that only humans and other apes suffered from gout, but experiments carried out on the Tyrannosaurus Rex called Sue, show that she probably suffered from gout too.
TCM formula Simiao
The Simiao Traditional Chinese Medicine formula may not date back to the dinosaurs, but it has been used for thousands years to treat many different problems. Known as the 'Four Marvels', the formula is usually made up of four herbal ingredients although there are some variations on the original formula. The most common combination is amur cork tree bark (Huang Bai),atractylodes thizome (Cang Zhu), achyranthes root (Huai Niu Xi) and coix seeds (Yi Yi Ren). The combination regulates heat and fluid in the lower parts of the body, directing the anti-inflammatory effect to the legs and supporting a metabolism that is free from swelling. This particular formula is one of the mainstay traditional treatments for Gout.
New Study reveals metabolic changes after taking Simiao
A new study carried out in the lab explored the effects of a liquid form of Simiao on the secretion of inflammatory cytokines IL-1 beta and TNF alpha in cells that had been treated with the monosodium urate crystals that cause gout inflammation. Results showed that the monosodium urate crystals caused increases in the IL - 1 beta and TNF alpha but that the Simiao liquid could decrease the IL1-beta secretion. The study concludes that Simiao decoction is a promising treatment for gouty inflammation. It's a bit late in the day for Sue though.
