The traditional Chinese herbal formula Danshen Gegen (Radix Salviae miltiorrhizae and Radix Puerariae lobatae) has been shown to have a cardiovascular protective effect in other studies and now a Hong Kong group have investigated its action in the treatment of high cholesterol in postmenopausal women. The team measured the lipid profile and the arterial wall thickness in a group treated with the Danshen Gegen and in another group that had taken placebo. They also looked at which relevant genes were stimulated in each group and conclude that the herb treated group had improved lipid profiles and arterial thickness measurements and that there was evidence of the stimulation of metabolic genes relevant to both .
