Conventional treatments for Cold sores  include topical antiviral creams which can shorten the length of time that a patient has the cold sore. In patients with regular outbreaks of cold sores, doctors may prescribe oral antivirals such as  acyclovir, valaciclovir, penciclovir and docosanol and analgesics to deal with the pain.  You may also be advised to use special dressings – plasters – impregnated with special wound care colloids that have been shown to increase rates of increase healing, with the advantage they also hide the herpes blister.

Research to find a vaccine for prevention and treatment of herpes is ongoing. These target specific genes in cells that are involved in replication of the virus, to disable the genes producing a protein needed by the virus to mature and replicate.
