Homeopathy was developed by Dr Samuel Hahnemann in the late 1700s. Hahnemann noticed that substances that created certain symptoms in healthy patients could be used in highly diluted forms to cure the same symptoms that occurred in sick people. This is the basis of his “like cures like” theory. Homeopathic remedies are made from plant, mineral and occasionally animal substances that are shaken and diluted to ‘potentize’ them.
Classical homeopaths believe in the ‘single’ remedy. In French they are called ‘uniciste’. Classical homeopaths look at the whole person, their health history, physical type, emotional type and family history and select a remedy that is the best fit for them.
Modern homeopathy includes many complex remedies. Complexes are remedies that are made by mixing together single homeopathic remedies that have synergistic actions. These mixes are then used to treat patients for a specific problem.
Some homeopaths work by giving a series of single remedies in a specific order, treating specific health problems in a person as if peeling away the layers of illness.
Homeopathy is considered to be a traditional form of medicine and there are homeopathic pharmacopoeias for France, Germany, the USA and India that set down detailed guidelines for the manufacture of remedies.
Patient QI’s view:
Homeopaths can make good coordinating therapists if they have sufficient medical knowledge in addition to their training in homeopathy. They must also be open minded about other therapies and not restricted to the one remedy, one therapy approach. Homeopathy itself is a good cost effective addition to any personal health strategy and is compatible with all other forms of medicine.

Rules Regulations and Associations
Homeopathic medicines/drugs are regulated in Europe through an EU directive and licensed through each individual country’s medicines control agency. In the USA homeopathic drugs are regulated through the FDA and the Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia of the United States (HPCUS). There is no global regulator of Homeopathic practitioners and therapists, some countries have regulation, some have self-regulation and some do not regulate the profession. The Liga Medicorum Homoeopathia Internationalis (LMHI) is a non-profit organisation that represents homeopaths internationally: http://liga.iwmh.net/
Medical doctors who are homeopaths in Europe have an umbrella organisation, the European Committee for Homeopathy (ECH): http://www.homeopathyeurope.org/about-ech.
