Kampo effective treatment for headaches and depression

Tokishakuyakusan is a Japanese Kampo herbal formula and is known as  Tangkuei and Peony Powder in English.  The formula is a combination of  Chinese peony root, white atractylodes rhizome, Alismatis Rhizoma, Sclerotium Poriae Cocos, chuanxiong root and angelica root.  Traditionally the formula has been used for women's problems such as irregular periods, painful periods, feeling cold, painful urinating, abdominal cramps, water retention and fatigue.  A new study has investigated the effects of Tokishakuyakusan on headaches with depression in middle aged women. The volunteers were separated into two groups, one group took the Tokishakuyakusan, and the other group were given hormone therapy.  Results showed that in  the Kampo treated volunteers,  65% had substantial relief in headaches and 60% had relief from depression compared to 29% and 24% respectively in the hormone treated group.  The results show that the Kampo treatment is clearly effective for both the headaches and depression that are associated with menopause.
