An excellent study carried out in Germany shows that long term intensive exercise lowers the risk of metabolic and cardiac disease in post menopausal women. The study was carried out over a 12 year period. All women participating in the study were between 1 and 8 years post menopause. Fifty-one women carried on with their normal exercise program while 87 followed an intensive exercise program (full details of the program can be found in the publication which is a free pubmed document).
