A US group has reviewed the case studies and published literature on the usefulness of art therapy in cases of dementia. They conclude that with appropriate structure, patients with dementia can produce and appreciate visual art and that this engages attention, provides pleasure, improves neuropsychiatric symptoms, social behaviour and self esteem. The team calls for a clinical enquiry to establish methods and assess the efficacy to define the best conditions and use of art therapy in Alzheimer’s and other dementias.
