What is the Alexander Technique?
The Alexander Technique was developed by Frederick Matthias Alexander back in the 1890s as a personal tool to help with breathing and combat hoarseness during public speaking. The technique is an educational one that looks at our muscular and mental tension, and how we can avoid this by learning good physical habits to achieve a balanced state of rest and poise in which the body is well-aligned. Practitioners believe that repeated misuse of the body over a long period of time, like sitting or standing with uneven weight distribution, can cause muscular and mental tension.
The treatment process involves the practitioner and the patient (or the teacher and the student) together selecting actions relevant in the patient´s everyday life, analyzing them, and devising suggestions for improvement in movement and posture to limit bad habits and inefficiency.
Evidence shows that the Alexander Technique is effective and cost-effective in treatment of chronic pain.
Patient QI view
Alexander Technique is definitely a worthwhile thing to do for overall general health and for sorting out years of posture problems and the pains that they may cause. Alexander Technique teachers may be good coordinators of therapies if they have been trained in other therapies alongside the Alexander Technique.
