Music therapists use music to improve health and help treat issues that can be physical, emotional, cognitive, social or spiritual. The therapy is an established profession and music therapists work in many different healthcare sectors as well as privately. Music therapy has clear evidence that it can show benefit to children and adolescents as well as adults and the elderly for stress related symptoms, mental health issues, learning disabilities; Alzheimer's disease and other aging related conditions; medical illnesses, such as cardiopulmonary diseases, cancer and end- stage illnesses; substance abuse problems; brain injuries; and physical disabilities, including acute and chronic pain, and pre-post natal care and pre-post surgical care.

Patient QI’s View

I think we all understand the power of music, and music therapists can help patients use that power to better effect. Music therapists would not necessarily be the best choice as your coordinating practitioner but they should certainly be considered as a therapy to be included in any strategy.

Rules Regulations and Associations

Music therapy in the UK is regulated by a number of different organisations each with a specific role. Practitioners are registered with the Health Professions Council and new registrants must normally hold a master's degree in music therapy. In the US to become board certified, a music therapist must complete a music therapy degree from an accredited AMTA program at a college or university, successfully complete a music therapy internship, and pass the Board Certification Examination in Music Therapy. The credential Music Therapist-Board Certified (MT-BC) is granted by The Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT) upon successful passage of the Board Certification Examination. Many states recognize the professional status of music therapists. As of June, 2011, the State of Nevada has recognized music therapy as a profession and passed legislation adding it as a license obtainable through the state board of health.
